Registry for Abandoned Nests

This system allows you to register one or multiple abandoned nests of species listed in Schedule 1 of the Migratory Birds Regulations, 2022. The Migratory Birds Regulations, 2022 are part of Canada’s strategy to conserve migratory birds, their nests and eggs, and to protect them from harm. Please visit the Migratory Birds page to read more about the conservation of migratory birds, their legal protection and the permits available.

All information included in this application will be treated as confidential. Personal information collected as part of the notification process is protected under the Privacy Act. Once the form has been submitted, a representative from the Government may contact you if needed.

Abandoned Nest Information

Please enter the information for the abandoned nest that you want to register. The following information, marked with an asterisk (*), is required to complete the registration.

Latitude and Longitude of the abandoned nest location must be entered in decimal degrees.

Nest or Colony Location Coordinates

Latitude and longitude should use the NADS 83 Datum and be entered in decimal degrees with a precision of at least 6 digits (For example latitude = 45.442839 and longitude = -75.733316 or latitude = 61.236248 and longitude = -119.656213.

In addition, if you are entering multiple nests with different latitude and longitude coordinates you can complete and submit this registration first. You will then be able to use the Register Another Nest button to duplicate the registrant data and enter new latitude and longitude coordinates.

For all colonial species, please enter one coordinate for the entire colony. For Pileated Woodpecker, please only enter one coordinate per nest.*

I confirm the information provided is true to the best of my knowledge. It is understood that providing this notification does not authorize the nest(s) to be damaged, destroyed, removed or disturbed until the conditions set out in paragraph 5(2)(c) of the Migratory Birds Regulations, 2022 are met.

I understand that providing false information will lead to the invalidity of this notification.

I confirm that the nests reported as abandoned were observed during a period when they could reasonably be expected to be occupied by breeding birds.

In cases where information has been entered into this registry and declarations made on behalf of an organization, I declare that I have been authorized by the organization to enter the information on its behalf.
